Oversized coats – which one to choose?

If there’s one thing I love it’s a good coat. When the seasonal trend is all about oversized coats, then I’m all over it like a cheap suit. I must admit to having a bit of an Imelda Marcos thing going on in the coat department. In fact one of my chores this week is to get in that spare closet and rifle through the stash of coats I’ve been ignoring for the last few seasons and get them packed off to sell in the pre-loved fashion revolution with the awesome Buy My Wardrobe team. Clearly I’m not in the cause and effect camp, as having too many coats in my possession never seems to stop me purchasing more.

So this season to welcome a brand new oversized coat into your wardrobe, what should you be looking out for? For me it’s all about texture and luxe fabrics. If I’m forking out a lump sum for a seasonal must-have, it has to have that luxury feel to it. The oversized coat is definitely an investment piece so think high end of high street or designer when making your choice.

This season I fell in love with this J.Crew collection tweed coat with jewelled collar. I spotted it way back in May when I stopped in at the J.Crew pop-up shop in London and remember drooling over it back then. I love the mash up of textures between the tweed, the fur on the arms and the hand-applied jewels on the collar. One word of warning…. weirdly whenever I wear it everyone strokes my arms like a pet…

How to wear it.

I think the overzised coat works best paired with simple neutrals. If you’re wearing it to the office think pencil skirt and half sleeve sweater for a MadMen take on the vibe. Alternatively a crop jacquard pant mixed up with a fluffy knit in the same tonal family works a treat too.

For the weekend pair with your favourite boyfriend jeans and biker boots for the perfect slouchy ‘off to brunch’ feel. I paired mine with grey neutrals; AG Jeans, a Nicole Farhi sweater similar here from J.Crew or here at Club Monaco , Zara boots (which have become my winter staple as they are soooo comfy) and The White Company scarf which I bought as a Christmas pressie for a relative but loved it so much I kept it myself…now they are sold out …doh! Don’t you hate it when that happens?? Similar chunky scarves here and here.

Hello there, it’s almost a year you have posted this, but I’m considering buying this coat. Since it’s oversized look…did you get your normal size or did you have to size down? I don’t want to look like a blown up snowman… Also, would you consider pretty warm? Chicago winter this year is terrible and I need a nice coat I can wear to work… This coat is final sale but I cannot try on or exchange/return. Thank you for your help in advance!

Is it the J.Crew coat? It’s amazingly warm! I normally find J.Crew are pretty generous in sizing anyway – I got my normal size and it’s oversized in the right way if you see what I mean… the sleeves are shorter than I expected. I remember Chicago weather (my sister still lives there…) I would probably wear the coat and maybe a sleeveless slimline quilt jacket under or a denim jacket (hot trend for spring and pre-fall) to counteract the windchill out there. Layering is the way to go for spring & fall & it’s perfect to do with this coat thanks to the oversize thing. Also every time I wear it I get so many compliments…. On the minus side the jewelled neckline keeps getting my hair stuck in it – but hey – fashion is worth suffering for right!! Hope that helps… Sara xx
